Almost nobody is a complete beginner – you will have taken some snaps with a phone or simple camera. Many people who come on our Complete Beginner level courses have just upgraded to DSLR, BRIDGE or MIRRORLESS camera or at least one that offers a degree of manual control over the shutter and aperture. Is it this huge step up that is holding you back ?
Can you drive a car? If so, how many lessons did you have? 10? 20? How many controls does a car have? Three pedals and a steering wheel, basically. Don’t beat yourself up if your camera, which is absolutely covered in knobs, buttons, menus, sub menus and zoom or focussing rings, is a bit of a mystery!
Even a two-hour tutorial will “get you off auto” and 4 hours will see you well on the way to complete control. The whole day masterclass will leave you an expert on bossing your camera into doing what you want it to do rather than being its slave.
Why not just stick with your phone? By using a better camera than can be built into a phone you open up a whole world of creative possibilities. Nothing wrong with phones and they have their advantages but for real fun and control nothing beats a proper camera – if you understand a few simple basics about how to use it. That is precisely what a beginners course will enable you to do.
On the other hand, if you do want to stick with a really simple camera or phone this course will give you loads of confidence to produce images with a completely fresh eye and composition – that’s what is really important.
Choose between a short beginner course and a longer more comprehensive tutorial.
“Your camera takes great photographs”. Ever heard that? Well after my beginners course you’ll be able to reply with confidence with this ultimate put-down
“thanks, your mouth makes great compliments”.

Do you know your ISO from your shutter speed and your zoom from your telephoto? – congratulations you’re an intermediate or higher. Whilst confident complete beginners (or just rusty old school snappers) often dive straight in to my intermediate courses I’d assume you knew a at least a few of the above terms. Intermediate tuition is totally customised to suit exactly what you need to learn to progress and after an initial session on a few important technical parts of shooting we move straight on to composition and producing pleasing, dare I say,“knockout” images. Not just the boring usual “rule of thirds” stuff either, we go way beyond the usual and push your creative horizons a little. This course starts to get to the heart of photography where technical stuff no longer gets in the way of your creativity – it’s all about developing your own photographic style.
We have been “doing photography” as our sole source of income for 30 years now – for some of the most demanding commercial clients on the planet. So, if we know about anything in life, it’s the ins and outs of producing compelling images. Advanced tutorials are designed to help you maximise your potential in any specialised area you wish – Sport, Fine Art, Architecture, Landscape, Portraits, Macro, Product, Travel, Wildlife to name just a few. The ultimate set of secrets and tips gathered over a lifetimes’ experience – dished out in simple to remember and easy steps. This will transform your work to an altogether higher plane (which reminds me, Aerial Photography can be covered too!). Very few (no?) commercial photography tuition courses can offer this level of instruction – the traditional route of degree level study followed by a year or two of assisting/internship isn’t necessary to grasp the area of photography that excites you if you are prepared to work hard and are given the right guidance – which is exactly what I can do for you, enthuse you and set you on the path to success.
Remember, we can offer not only practical location classes but studio based as well. In addition we can teach you how to work on the post-production of your images in Photoshop,Lightroom or other software. Processing and storing your work digitally are essential skills and we can run courses at all levels from simple introduction to specialised stuff like colour control, advanced retouching and “Digital Asset Management”.

At the Photo School Bristol we believe in clear and transparent pricing and that’s exactly what is shown in our price list – these prices are not available on any “special offer” websites at silly discounts because they represent what we feel is a fair price for our time and value for money for you at these levels of tuition and guidance personalised to your exact needs.
We don’t aim to compete with cut-price internet deals and a race to the bottom pricing model but simply offer the highest quality guidance and personalised help. Our courses are fun, effective and stimulating and will raise your game from whatever level you are currently shooting at.
